Rain Barrel Application Deadline approaching
January 14th, 2010
The Deadline for Application to the Artistic Rain Barrel Program is January 25, 2010. In total, 25 artists and teachers will be selected for this year’s program to design and paint a rain barrel to be placed on display in local businesses and libraries throughout Lincoln from March to April 2010, after which they will be auctioned off following an Artistic Rain Barrel exhibition at the Pioneer’s Park Nature’s Market on April 17th at 9 a.m., with proceeds of auction will go to Pioneers Park Nature Center’s scholarship programs or scholarship program for summer camps and preschool classes.
The Friends of Pioneers Park Nature Center and the City of Lincoln Watershed Management Division are joining teams on a fun project to educate the community on the benefits of using rain barrels to reduce runoff and improve water quality. We are inviting artists to paint their creative designs on a rain barrel. The 55 gallon plastic barrels will be fully assembled with two coats of primer; the artist is responsible for supplying their own paint for their design, a top coat is provided. Each painted barrel will display in libraries and local businesses in Lincoln from March until April 2010.
For a second year, we are inviting artists to creatively paint rain barrels, as part of a fun way to educate the community on the benefits of using rain barrels to improve water quality. Potential artists will be required to submit a short summary and sketch of their intended design for a rain barrel. The Friends of Pioneers Park and the City of Lincoln will choose artists based on their applications. Teachers who wish to apply for their class will be required to submit a short description of how they will use the rain barrel as a teaching tool in their classroom for consideration. In total, 25 artists and teachers will be selected for this year’s program.
Once artists and teachers have been selected, they will have four weeks to paint and return their barrels. After barrels have been returned, they will be displayed around the City of Lincoln for one to two months at local businesses and libraries, spending the last week at the Nature Center.
Thousands of people will be exposed to this artwork, as photos of all decorated barrels will be posted on the City of Lincoln’s website. This program will be publicized via newspaper and radio. Additionally, all artistic barrels will be on display with interpretative signage throughout Lincoln during March and April 2010. The barrels will be auctioned off following an Artistic Rain Barrel exhibition at the Pioneer’s Park Nature’s Market on April 17th at 9 a.m., with proceeds of auction will go to Pioneers Park Nature Center’s scholarship programs or scholarship program for summer camps and preschool classes.
Below are the Call for Artists, Artist Guidelines, and Artistic Rain Barrel Application which must be returned by January 25, 2010 in order to be considered for the program.
